A New 10M Long Bespoke Curved Outdoor Bench For Horatio’s Garden

Horatios Garden

We’re delighted to announce our 10m handcrafted oak outdoor bench has arrived in the NHS Spinal Centre of the Stoke Mandeville Hospital this week.  This has been one of our most challenging projects this year – to make possibly one of the longest curved outdoor benches in the world!

Horatio’s Garden is an important charity which we are delighted to support. Dr Olivia Chapple and her team are creating with love and great care wonderful, accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres.  In March this year the charity announced that the fundraising appeal to create a third garden sanctuary for patients with spinal cord injuries reached its £850,000 target.  Four months on, the build for the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Bucks. is nearing completion.

AN INSPIRING CHALLENGE

Joe Swift, an RHS Gold medal winner and presenter of BBC Gardeners’ World, has designed Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville. He approached Gaze Burvill with a challenge, to design and build a bespoke outdoor seat for the new garden to follow the contours of the central ellipse linking the focal water feature and the stone carved memorial.

We were very proud to be asked to create the outdoor bench, our latest piece for Horatio’s Garden, which has over 250 slats and 7 discreetly interlinked sections all following different curves – designed to flow with the calm vibe of the garden creating a haven of tranquillity for the patients, their friends and family.

Everybody at Gaze Burvill’s workshop had a hand in creating this piece out of oak, which has challenged and inspired us in equal measure.
