Fred McCaig’s role as General Manager is to ensure that Gaze Burvill has the necessary talent, resources and capability to deliver its cutting edge designs.  This directly relates to procedures and processes to operate effectively and safely, but also to recognise the external threats.

When asked what it meant to ACID to have Fred join them, Dids Macdonald, CEO of ACID said;

“The ACID Council is a guiding influence on design and IP strategy now and for the future and the diversity of its membership ensures that all sector issues and IP interests are identified and represented. Fred McCaig brings a keen awareness of IP to our Council and is determined to influence not only the garden sector but our Council on strategies to change the culture that it appears to be OK to produce lookalikes of original designs. Gaze Burvill are active members of ACID and, following an Intellectual Property Strategy Review, have created a robust and proactive intellectual property (IP) strategy.”

And when Fred was asked what it meant to him and Gaze Burvill, he said;

“It is a great honour to have been invited to actively work with ACID.  Recognising Gaze Burvill as a champion of design and innovation in the furniture making sector appreciates the experience of having to manage the constant threat of design right infringement.”

Anti Copying in Design

Anti Copying in Design, or ACID, is the UK’s leading design and intellectual property campaigning organisation.  Their aim is to provide cost effective tips, advice and guidelines to help their members protect their intellectual property to achieve growth through a proactive IP strategy.

ACID represents companies who rely on design to maintain their position in the marketplace.  Providing support through advocacy, lobbying and expertise, they help to protect companies like Gaze Burvill, who have been members for the past 20 years, that invest heavily in creativity and innovation.

For companies like Gaze Burvill who build their reputation on original design, there is a high-profile message on their website about their policy of taking legal action if their IP is infringed. Communicating a proactive IP strategy is essential and ensuring there is a robust policy in place to protect drawings and materials sent to customers is an essential part of any sales process. One of the most vulnerable situations is designs being replicated from sales drawings and specification documents and this is where the ACID IP Databank can provide that vital evidence to support ownership.

In his downtime, ‘outside life’ is what’s important to Fred, who has taken part in both sprint and olympic triathlons, and is currently training for half Ironman.   With his family, he has been wild camping around Wales, Dorset and Cornwall, and has recently completed a 78 mile walk in 3.5 days on the South Downs Way, camping each night – quite the adventurers!

Fred’s favourite Gaze Burvill piece is the Broadwalk Round Table as he says:

“the detail of its structure and design reflect traditional skills in a contemporary design that reveals the true capability of our team of makers.”
